• Malaysia officially completed the Nvidia-powered data center in Kulai (Johor), located within the 600 MW YTL Power Green Data Park, marking a significant step in the nation’s journey to build a national artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.
  • The center is equipped with liquid-cooled Grace Blackwell (GB200) NVL72 GPUs – Nvidia’s leading technology, combined with the Malaysian-developed large language model ILMU, aiming for “sovereign AI” to ensure data security and technological autonomy.
  • The announcement was made in South Korea, during a meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, 22 months after the first meeting between Anwar and Huang in Kuala Lumpur (December 2023).
  • Anwar Ibrahim emphasized: “Malaysia will become a leading AI nation by 2030, building a sustainable, inclusive, and ethical digital economy.”
  • Since 2023, Malaysia has:
    • Established the National AI Office under the Ministry of Digital.
    • Launched the AI Cloud and AI upskilling programs in the public and private sectors.
    • Unveiled ILMU – Malaysia’s first large language model at the ASEAN AI Summit 2025.
  • The government allocated RM5.9 billion (~$1.23 billion USD) in the 2026 budget to accelerate AI infrastructure development, linked to the National Industrial Master Plan (NIMP), focusing on related manufacturing and service sectors.
  • YTL Power affirms that the development of a “sovereign cloud” is a strategic factor helping the nation control and operate AI services for the government and its citizens.
