Design Council CEO Mat Hunter noted that AI helps increase the value of work, and the demand for designers will continue to grow.
Design Business Council Director Deborah Dawton stated that skills, experience, empathy, and industry understanding are advantages that AI can hardly replace.
A survey by King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Policy Institute showed that 57% of the public worry AI will cause widespread unemployment.
Some freelancers reported that they are currently fixing errors from generative AI products, rather than being completely replaced by AI.
The Design Economy 2026 report showed that the design industry grew by 40% between 2019 and 2023, higher than the 23% growth of the overall UK economy.
The sector supports 2.27 million jobs in construction, manufacturing, and services, with employment increasing by 15% between 2020 and 2025.
The gross value added (GVA) of the design sector reached 136.7 billion British pounds (approx. $184.5 billion), surpassing the retail sector at 114 billion pounds (approx. $153.9 billion) and nearly doubling the accommodation and food services sector at 70 billion pounds (approx. $94.5 billion).
The South East of England contributed 43.3 billion pounds (approx. $58.5 billion), while the North East reached 3.1 billion pounds (approx. $4.2 billion).
A representative of the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers likened AI to an “office intern,” supporting work rather than replacing skilled personnel.
The report also warned of a shortage of new talent as the number of students enrolling in GCSE design and technology subjects dropped by 68% in the decade ending in 2024.
