On June 2, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to promote AI innovation and security, asserting that the U.S. will maintain its leadership position by reducing regulatory barriers and accelerating AI deployment across both the public and private sectors.
The administration has required multiple federal agencies, within 30 days, to prioritize strengthening cyber defenses for national security systems, civilian agencies, and critical infrastructure.
CISA will issue new guidance to accelerate the protection of government information technology systems, expand AI-driven cyber defense programs, and support institutions such as rural hospitals, community banks, and local utility providers.
The Department of the Treasury, NSA, and CISA will establish an AI cybersecurity coordination center to detect software vulnerabilities, validate risks, and prioritize patch deployment.
The government is also considering financial support for projects developing AI-based security vulnerability detection technologies and expanding the recruitment of federal cybersecurity experts.
Within 60 days, the NSA and relevant agencies will develop a classified assessment process to identify “covered frontier models,” which are advanced AI models with notable cybersecurity capabilities.
Developers can voluntarily provide their models to the government for evaluation up to 30 days prior to release and coordinate to select trusted partners for early testing.
The executive order explicitly emphasizes that the government will not implement any mechanism for licensing, prior approval, or mandatory permits regarding the development, publication, or release of new AI models.
The Department of Justice has been directed to intensify the prosecution of acts using AI or AI Agents to breach computer systems, steal data, or commit other criminal activities.
📌 The new executive order reflects the Trump administration’s “AI First” strategy: aggressively driving innovation while simultaneously reinforcing cybersecurity defenses. The most notable aspect is the establishment of a voluntary evaluation mechanism for advanced AI models while rejecting the idea of mandatory licensing. The government aims to collaborate with the private sector to protect digital infrastructure, detect vulnerabilities, and deploy AI safely without slowing down the pace of American technological advancement.
